マルク･シャガール
Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

ロシア、現在のベラルーシ共和国にある寒村ヴィテブスクの貧しいユダヤ人の家庭に生まれ、帝都ペテルブルグの美術学校で学ぶ。１９１１年から１４年までパリに住み、詩人サンドラール、アポリネールらと親交を結ぶ。キュビスムの空間的効果、ドローネーらの鮮烈な色彩表現に影響を受けたが、子供の頃の記憶からイメージを引き出し、詩的で豊穣な、シャガールならではの幻想的な様式を展開。１９１４年、ベルリンの表現主義の牙城シュトゥルム画廊で個展を開催、その後も同画廊と関係を保ち、ドイツ表現主義の運動に影響を与える。二度にわたる世界大戦の戦火や、ヨーロッパ中を踏みにじったナチ政権によるユダヤ民族迫害、アメリカへの亡命、制作の霊感の源であった愛妻ベラの死去など、さまざまな苦難を乗り越えて画業を深め、世界中の人々に愛と希望を与え続けた。１９５０年から南仏のヴァンスに定住し、晩年にいたるまで旺盛な制作意欲を発揮したが、１９８５年に惜しまれつつ逝去。享年９７歳。
