DNA of “Sunday” & “Magazine”
– 50th Years of Weekly Shonen Manga –
|
In the wake of the war in 1959, two weekly shonen manga launched simultaneously that changed the manga world forever. They were “Weekly Shonen Sunday” (Shogakukan) and “Weekly Shonen Magazine” (Kodansha). During the 50 years that followed, the two rival companies fought on and evolved alongside each other. These two weekly manga are recognized in the industry as instrumental in the development of Japanese culture since the war, and have always been pushing themselves outside of normal perception. With this exhibition we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of these two great weekly manga. Showcasing over 100 items from the iconic works to current favorites, and accompanied with extra editions and related goods, the exhibition takes a look into the weekly shonen manga’s history that spanned half a century.
The exhibition also features original prints from Ikki Kajiwara (creator of “Star of the Giants [Kyojin no hoshi]” and “Tomorrow’s Joe [Ashita no jo]”), and concept sketches by Mitsuru Adachi (of “Touch” and “H2”), amongst other rare items. Please come with your family and enjoy this special exhibition.
