Works from the Russian master animator Yury Norshtein (b. 1941) and his wife and art director for many of his works, Francheska Yarbusova (b. 1942), will be on show at the largest retrospective exhibition in Japan, a country that Norshtein loves.
The film that was based on his own background and experiences, “Tale of Tales” (1979), from which this exhibition gets it name, was in 1984 chosen by international critics as the greatest animated film of all time. Norshtein, who has also been called the "Pushkin of animation", creates the poetically-laced worlds of his movies, brought to life by his sharp attention to detail and through the delicate expression of cut-out images.
The worlds he creates with his animations are always rich in affection for the world and its people. The depth afforded by his use of placing handmade cut-outs on multiple planes has been attracting not only animation fans, but film creators the world over.
This exhibition showcases the media that surround 8 of his animated films, Yarbusova’s exquisite esquisses, maquettes of the multiple planes he uses in his works, original drawings and 900 other items that shed light into their creative world.
