Kyupi Kyupi, led by film director-modern artist-auteur multitalented genius Yoshimasa Ishibashi, will be putting on its first new piece in eight years. Kyupi Kyupi’s first live performance in eight years will be the ultimate media art experience: fun and exciting, sexy and daring. Incorporating visual effects such as 3D images, it will be a pop and sensual never-before-seen style of entertainment. This will be the first performance of “atmesppai”—meaning “air filled with the uniqueness that is Kyupi Kyupi”—in Japan! Formed in 1996, this visual and performance unit based in Kyoto currently is made up of film director-modern artist-auteur multitalented genius leader Yoshimasa Ishibashi (staging, visuals), Mazuka Kimura (formative arts) and Kijyo Emura (graphic design). They have exhibited numerous image products and installations in modern art museums both in Japan and abroad including Pompidou Centre, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Tate Modern and a solo exhibit in 2010 at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA). At the same time, they have produced edgy visual works and writing as well as cutting edge live performances with song and dance.
