What is the Kochi Art Net Project?

he concept of ‘Citizen-Curated Exhibitions’ was first implemented in 2006,
in an attempt to have the general public get involved in organizing art exhibitions.
The first of these exhibits was the ‘Nenriki-Canvas’, which was an exhibit of the gallery’s collection
organized using a theme submitted by 9 members of the public. Last year saw the second installment
– the Great Public Request Exhibition, where works were selected by ballots collected from the general public.

This year marks the third installment, and is entitled ‘Kochi Art Net Project’.
This project involves the cooperation of art spaces and local galleries
– both public and private. A Kochi Art Gallery Map will be produced, and various events held across the prefecture.
We hope this project will allow
Kochi citizens to come into greater contact with art in their daily lives.

This exhibition will trace the history of the major movements and events in the Kochi art
-scene since the first Kochi Art Show in 1947, through to the present day.

Section 1: Kochi Art Show

After the war, Shintoku Yamawaki became a central figure who advocated promoting Kochi’s redevelopment through art.
The Kochi Newspaper set up the Kochi Art Show in 1947, which has been held every autumn for over 60 years.
This became the stage for many of
Kochi’s artists.
This part of the exhibition focuses on the artists who put so much effort into setting up this event
– including Shintoku Yamawaki and Hiroshi Nakamura.

Section 2: TosaAvante-GardeSchool

In the 1950s, the avante-garde movement of abstract expressionism
– which has continued to the present day – became widespread in
Kochi.
Kochi’s avante-garde artists banded together to form the ‘Tosa Avante-Garde’ School in 1962.
Via the exhibitions organized under the banner of the Kochi Art Show and the Tosa-School,
these artists had a lasting impact upon developments in the modern art scene in
Kochi
This part of the exhibition features the works of artists from the 1960s who were central to the Tosa Avante-GardeSchool.
This includes the works of the movement’s leaders, Tomiji Hamaguchi and Gensho Takasaki.

Section 3: Local Culture Hall Prize Exhibition

The Kochi Prefectural Local Culture Hall (renamed the Kochi Museum of Literature) was opened in 1969.
One of its goals was to promote art and greater creativity amongst those involved in the local writing scene (from the 1993 Catalog).
With this in mind the Hall set up the ‘Local Culture Hall Prize Exhibition’ in 1982,
which continued until the 12th and final exhibition in 1993 – the year that the Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art was opened.
This exhibition brings together all the works that won this competition over its 12 year history.

Section 4: Opening of the Museum of Art

The Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art was opened in 1993,
and this institution has been the main exhibitor and collector of art in
Kochi ever since.
The museum has also been active in many fields, such as art projects and workshops with Japanese and international writers.
This section of the exhibition features works produced for these art projects,
and reflects upon the fresh approach embodied by the gallery.
