This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Marc Chagall – one of the leading artists of the 20th Century. He was born in 1887 into a poor Jewish family in Vitebsk, a remote village in Belarus, then part of Russia. His robust sense of colour blossomed upon his move to Paris, but his life was marred by a series of tragedies. He lived through both World Wars, and experienced the march of Nazism across Europe and the ensuing persecution of Jews. He fled to America, only to suffer the loss of his wife Bella, the source of his artistic inspiration. However, he overcame these obstacles, deepening his artistry and began to produce works possessed of a great sense of narrative, brimming with poetic and vivid colours. His works continued to provide love and hope to devotees around the world until his death at 97 in 1985.

This exhibition commemorates the 120th anniversary of Chagall’s birth, an artist who depicted a ‘world of love’ throughout his career. It concentrates on his collections of prints, including ‘ Dead Souls’, his first major work of printed illustrations, and the lithograph ‘Daphne and Chloe’, widely regarded as a masterpiece of the first order. This special display from our collection brings together around 270 dream-like prints and oil paintings that offer up an ode to love and life with his exuberant lines and dancing colours.

A reading of ‘Dead Souls’ – a half-marathon
An interesting and exciting reading marathon – take away some great literary morsels

Chagall’s first major opus of illustrations is a collection of 96 prints based on ‘Dead Souls’, a novel penned by his compatriot, Nicolai Gogol. This story is a stage for many characters, but its central story traces the story of the con-artist Chichikov – a man who attempts to profit from acquiring the rights to dead serfs. It is a story overflowing with acerbic yet humorous descriptions of fallen nobility and corrupt officials. Each of Chagall’s illustrations are so full of life that one falls under the illusion that he must have been there at the time. The facial expressions on each character are so delightful as to invite a strong feeling of affinity with them – even if you have not read the novel.
At the reading half-marathon – a first for this museum – we will view Chagall’s paintings while reading the novel together. We have invited a producer, Mr Nakajima, to act as MC, and reading will proceed at times slowly, and at times as if he were actually one of the characters. It should be an enjoyable way to experience the world of this novel and these pictures. ‘Dead Souls’ is a very long novel, so the reading will be broken up into chapters over 4 days. You may come for only 1 day, or come for the complete 4 days. Immerse yourself in the world of Gogol’s and Chagall’s ‘Dead Souls’.
