The photographer Kazuyoshi Nomachi was born and raised in 1946 in Mihara Village, in the Hata district of Kochi Prefecture. He graduated from Kochi Technical High School, and became the pupil of Takashi Kijima. As a freelancer in his mid-twenties, he traveled to the Sahara Desert, and was struck by the huge scale of the natural environment and toughness of the inhabitants of this unforgiving landscape. To this day he has continued to document similar environments through photography.
Nomachi is known for traveling to the most extreme locations – scorching deserts, towering highlands and remote river headwaters. His photographs are imbued with a respectful outlook on the people who live in these climes, and in their grand scale capture the essence of the landscape. After years of taking such photographs, Nomachi strongly feels that human beings cannot survive in such a harsh environment without the support of religion. It can be said that modern Japan has reached a state of spiritual desertification, and can thus be thought of as such a harsh environment. Nomachi depicts the peoples of these so-called frontier lands, their search for spirituality and the expression of their faith in prayer. Perhaps this contrast to modern Japan, replete with a form of alienation caused by bloated hyper-capitalism, will give pause for us to consider what it is to live a good life.
This exhibition brings together around 190 of Nomachi’s works that represent
a cross-section of his career as he traveled to the four corners of the
earth. We are transported to the Sahara, the Nile, Ethiopia, the Andes,
Mecca, Iran, and finally to the Ganges in his latest collection of works.
In viewing the life of these various peoples and cultures, and especially
the act of prayer that is deeply rooted in their lives, we may come to
a place of deeper appreciation.
