This exhibition introduces the works of Hiroshi Okutani, an oil-painter and member of the Japan Art Academy who was born in Sukumo City, Kochi. Born in 1934, he entered the Oil Painting course at the Art Department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1955. Despite this time being the height of the Abstract Art period, Okutani set out on the path to Representational Art. In 1964, he became an assistant at his alma mater, and set about producing frescoes during his year as mural research coordinator. He took this opportunity to suddenly move away from the thickly applied paint that characterised his student period, to an expressive style based on thinly applied paint. He left for Europe as a participant in the Ministry of Education’s inaugural Artists’ Study Abroad program in 1967. After many subsequent periods of study overseas, he developed a unique fantastical style characterised by contrasting strong colours, and tight composition. In March 2007, his exhibition `Hiroshi Okutani – Journeys to World Heritage Sites` was opened at the Paris headquarters of UNESCO. This exhibition takes a look at life and death, featuring works from the oeuvre of a man still very active in his work. It brings together 60 of his oil paintings, and 8 of his sketches and watercolours. |
