Kochi Museum of Art currently holds 12,397 works in its collection, made up of outstanding examples of modern and contemporary art. The three pillars of the galleries collection are: The works of Marc Chagall, Expressionist and Neo-expressionist works, and The Green Work and Artists of Kochi. These works are introduced to the public through regular exhibits of the collection.

102 candidate pieces were specially selected from the 12,397 works in the collection, with the public voting to request their favourite works. Voters were asked to choose a work from each of three categories: Contemporary Art of Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism, Modern Japanese Painting, and Local Art. Works which garnered the most votes were selected, with between 5 and 18 works from each category making the final cut. A total of 31 works were thus selected to be in the exhibition. There was also another voting category, named ‘I really have to see this!’. Another 6 works were selected in this category. So please enjoy this selection of works, one that has a somewhat different flavour to most exhibitions here at the gallery.

Remember that 2 other exhibitions are also on at the same time: Kohei Morita and Sokyu Yamamoto, ‘The Luxuriant World of Japanese Painting’ and Marc Chagall, ‘Stained Glass of Jerusalem’. This is a great chance to see the art gallery’s collection at these 3 exhibitions for the special low price of 500yen! Don’t miss this chance!
